アジア人のために生まれた、特別な「AR」。
1969年、秋のニューヨーク。
さまざまな人種や文化が共存するこの街で、チャイナタウンのある眼鏡店から、Julius Tart（ジュリアス・タート）氏のもとへ一つの依頼が届きます。
「中国人をはじめ、アジア人にも掛けやすいARを作ってほしい。」
当時のARは、欧米人の顔立ちを基準とした鼻まわりの設計。その要望に応えるため、鼻幅24mmのARに独立型のノーズパッドを取り付けた特別仕様が製作されました。
それが、「CHINATOWN SPECIAL ORDER」です。
当時、この独立型ノーズパッドは「Mechanical Nose（メカニカルノーズ）」と呼ばれ、この仕様のARが製造されたのは、記録上わずか2回ほど。
そんな希少なアーカイブを現代に蘇らせたのが、今回の復刻モデルです。
特徴的なのは、2本のピンで構成されたリターンアーム式のノーズパッド。山折りのエルボーを設けることで、掛ける人に合わせて鼻幅を細かく調整できる構造になっています。
ノーズパッドの形状も当時のヴィンテージを忠実に再現。パッドにはフレーム本体と同じアセテートを使用し、美しい光沢仕上げを施しています。
オリジナルではパールホワイトの生地が使われていましたが、経年変化による黄ばみを考慮し、復刻ではフレームと同色のアセテートへ。
さらに復刻第一弾は、メタルパーツをすべてゴールドメッキで統一。
単に「掛けやすくしたAR」ではありません。
ニューヨークという多文化の街で、ひとつの声から生まれた特別なAR。
約半世紀の時を経て、そのストーリーとディテールが現代に蘇ります。
